Cue — Privacy Policy
Last updated: June 8, 2026
This policy explains what Cue ("the app", "we", "us") does with your data. Cue is a camera app that gives real-time photography guidance and AI-assisted edits.
The short version
- Cue does not require an account and does not ask for your name, email, or contact info.
- When you use an AI feature (Auto framing/settings or AI Edit), Cue sends a single downsized camera frame, or the photo you're editing, to our server, which forwards it to a cloud AI model to generate guidance or edits. That image is processed transiently and not stored.
- Photos you capture are saved to your device's photo library. We never upload your photo library.
- We use anonymous, privacy-preserving analytics to understand how features are used (e.g. how often Auto is used, whether an edit was kept). This contains no images and no information that identifies you.
- If you subscribe, Apple processes the payment. We never see your card or billing details.
Information we process
Camera images (only for AI features). Cue's live preview and on-device scene analysis run entirely on your phone. When you actively trigger an AI feature, a single downsized image (long edge ~1024px) is sent over an encrypted (HTTPS) connection to our backend, which forwards it to our AI provider to return photography guidance or edit settings. We do not send images during normal capture — only when you ask the AI to help.
Anonymous usage analytics. To improve the app, we record anonymous product events such as: app opened, onboarding completed, an Auto shot taken, whether you kept the original or Cue's edit, and whether a paywall was shown. These events are tied to a random, app-generated identifier, not to your identity, and never include image content, the contents of your photos, or precise location.
Subscription data. If you purchase a subscription, the transaction is handled by Apple. Our subscription provider (RevenueCat) receives a random app-generated user ID and your purchase/receipt status so we can unlock paid features and prevent abuse. We do not receive your name, email, or payment card information.
Device integrity (anti-abuse). To protect our service from automated abuse, the app uses Apple's App Attest, which generates a device-bound cryptographic key. This key is anonymous and is used only to confirm requests come from a genuine, unmodified copy of Cue. It does not identify you or track you across apps.
- Camera — to show the viewfinder and analyze the scene.
- Add to Photos — to save the pictures you capture.
- Choosing a photo to edit uses the system photo picker, which does not grant Cue standing access to your library.
We do not collect your contacts, precise location, or advertising identifiers, and we do not use your data for advertising or sell it.
How we use it
- Images are used solely to generate the guidance or edit you requested, then returned to your app.
- Anonymous analytics are used only to understand feature usage and improve the app.
- Subscription status is used only to unlock paid features and enforce fair usage limits.
Sharing and third parties (subprocessors)
To run Cue we share the minimum necessary data with:
- Amazon Web Services (AWS) — Bedrock, which runs the Anthropic Claude models we use. Per AWS, content submitted to Amazon Bedrock is not stored by the service and is not used to train the underlying models, and is not shared with the model provider for training. Processing occurs within our AWS account boundary.
- Apple — processes subscription payments and delivers the app.
- RevenueCat — manages subscription entitlements (receives an anonymous user ID and purchase status only).
- Mixpanel (US data residency) — processes the anonymous usage events described above. Events are tied to a random, app-generated identifier and never contain images or the contents of your photos.
We do not sell your data or share it for cross-context behavioral advertising.
Data retention
- Images: not retained. The image you send for an AI feature exists only transiently to produce a response. Our backend is stateless and saves no copy.
- Analytics events: retained in anonymized form to analyze trends.
- Subscription status: retained while your subscription is active as required to provide the service.
Your choices
- You can decline the Camera permission, though AI features require it.
- You can use Cue without a subscription (the free tier).
- Where required by law (e.g. GDPR/CCPA), you may request information about or deletion of data associated with your anonymous identifier by contacting us; because we don't hold identifying information, we may ask for the identifier shown in the app's settings to locate it.
Security
All communication between the app and our backend uses encrypted HTTPS (TLS). Requests are authenticated with Apple's App Attest to prevent abuse.
Children
Cue is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect data from them.
Changes
We may update this policy; the "Last updated" date above will change. Continued use of the app means you accept the current policy.
